Brain in a Jar Books

Review by Peter Young in The White Notebooks #17 (April 2020).

I’ve not read any Gary Gibson for a few years, so this short novel was a welcome return. Set mostly in a near-future Taiwan which has experienced a time/space ‘Rift’ that brings forth kaiju, this serves as the backdrop for a car race across the island in which not everyone arrives at the finish line, and there are other interests involved that want to capitalise on the Rift itself. I’d like to have seen the kaiju in more detail, and casual comparisons with Death Race 2000 or Wacky Races probably aren’t all that helpful. Very enjoyable, nonetheless, and I particularly liked the cheeky Black Sabbath/Motörhead reference.
